Duration: Half-day walking tour (4-6 hours)
Location: Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture
Group: 1~6
Step into a world where art, history, and everyday life blend seamlessly along the winding backstreets of Tokoname, one of Japan’s legendary “Six Ancient Kilns.”
Your journey begins with a warm welcome from Tokoname’s most famous guardian — a giant beckoning cat (maneki-neko) that towers playfully above the old town. From there, we wander through the iconic Pottery Footpath, a rustic hillside trail lined with walls of stacked clay jars and recycled ceramic fragments. Every turn reveals the ingenious ways Tokoname’s craftsmen have woven clay into the town’s fabric, creating both beauty and function.
Along the way, discover:
• Quaint artisan workshops and galleries, where shelves brim with Tokoname’s signature tea ware, sake cups, and contemporary ceramics.
• Hidden shrines and whimsical statues, including earthy clay guardians and quirky vintage displays that capture the spirit of the town.
• Inviting cafés and old houses, where time slows down and the air carries the scent of history, wood, and clay.
• Garden patios and kiln remains, where Tokoname’s centuries-old relationship with fire and earth comes vividly to life.
This is not just a walk — it’s an immersion into Japan’s pottery heritage, where every jar, stair, and back-alley detail tells a story.
✨ Designed for: Travelers who love history, art, hidden gems, and the charm of old Japan.
🚶 Walking pace: Relaxed, with plenty of time for photos, browsing, and enjoying a coffee break.
The full route and hidden stops are revealed only to confirmed guests.

Tom guided us (family of 4 from the UK with boys aged 15 and 11) from Nagoya through the Nakasendo trail. What a day! We enjoyed every minute. Tom was great fun and very knowledgeable. Would highly recommend. Thanks Tom for great memories
I met Tom earlier this year when my family and I joined a small group tour of Japan that he was leading.I’ve done many trips of this type over the years and know from experience that the quality of the guide can make or break our holiday.Tom is right up there with the very best and I have no hesitation in recommending him.His knowledge of Japan and its history is extensive and his passion for the culture and the people is infectious. Furthermore, nothing was too much trouble and he consistently provided support and recommendations that went way beyond the core agenda of the trip. We had a fabulous time and, if we ever visit Japan again, we’d want to have Tom as our guide.
My wife and I had a very enjoyable, entertaining and educational day with Tom in Kyoto. We learnt so much of the history and mythology as well as trying new experiences in the market. Highly recommended.
